Hawk Happenings - September 2019

September 1, 2019

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I am excited to begin my journey as the superintendent of Woodward-Granger CSD and look forward to partnering with families as we work to make W-G a premier school district. The staff and faculty are committed to ‘build futures’ for the students served in this community. This monumental work will be done ‘one student at a time through a supportive culture of high expectations’. We know we must prepare all of our students for a successful life after graduation and equip them with the skills necessary to succeed in a competitive, global world.

In order to prepare our students for success in 21st century society and the workplace we must commit to developing the skills, abilities and learning dispositions necessary for our students to be successful in a rapidly changing world. The 21st century skills are embedded in the Woodward-Granger CSD Vision and Core Beliefs. These skills stretch beyond content knowledge skills and are universal for any career.

We need students to be critical and reflective thinkers. Students need to be able to solve problems systematically and find innovative solutions to complex problems. Additionally, we want students to express creativity and innovation. It is important for our students to ‘think outside the box’ and imagine the unimaginable. We are preparing our young people for jobs that don’t even exist yet!

Likewise, students will need to become effective communicators and have the ability to communicate through speaking, writing, reading and listening. We need to provide learning opportunities for students to work together to find the best possible results for solving a problem. It will be critical for our students to use effective group skills in order to foster, develop and maintain supportive relationships with others in culturally diverse work, community educational and family settings.

We know lifelong learners must demonstrate flexibility, motivation and skills necessary to initiate learning for personal and occupational growth using multiple resources and technologies. Further, we must help students develop into responsible citizens and demonstrate positive character traits and take the initiative and time to improve the quality of life for themselves and others in their local and global environment.

We will not be successful if this work occurs in isolation. It will require a partnership with all of our stakeholders in the learning community. The Woodward-Granger CSD wants to partner with you as we work to prepare our students for success beyond the K-12 experience. I look forward to working together in this important work!
